The National Communications Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has described the president’s decision to lift the ban of partial lockdown as “totally premature and lacks scientific basis”.
According to Sammy Gyamfi, the decision is politically motivated that aims at making space for the Electoral Commission to compile a new voter’s register for the 2020 general elections.
"The lifting of the partial lockdown by President Akufo-Addo, at a time the country is witnessing astronomical increases in positive COVID-19 cases, particularly horizontal infections, is totally premature and lacks scientific basis.”
He also questioned why the president will place political convenience ahead of public safety.
“It is clearly a politically motivated decision, calculated to allow the EC the space to undertake its entrenched and illogical determination to compile a new voters’ register for the 2020 general elections and nothing more."
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo lifted restrictions imposed on the movement of persons within some parts of Greater Accra, Tema, Kasoa and Greater Kumasi after a three weeks partial lockdown.
This decision, the President says is to give government the opportunity to try to contain the spread of the virus, scale-up effectively the tracing of persons who had come into contact with infected persons, test them for the virus, and quarantine those who tested positive and isolate them for treatment.
However, Sammy Gyamfi describes this decision as "a reckless political gamble that portends great danger for this nation. Ghanaians must never forgive him if this unimaginable decision exacerbates our COVID-19 situation. The blame for any fatality that is occasioned by this reckless decision must lie squarely with the President."
Below is his full statement
LIFTING OF PARTIAL LOCKDOWN BY PRESIDENT AKUFO-ADDO; A CHOICE OF POLITICAL EXPEDIENCY OVER PUBLIC SAFTEY.
The lifting of the partial lockdown by President Akufo-Addo, at a time the country is witnessing astronomical increases in positive COVID-19 cases, particularly horizontal infections, is totally premature and lacks scientific basis.
It is clearly a politically-motivated decision, calculated to allow the EC the space to undertake its entrenched and illogical determination to compile a new voters’ register for the 2020 general elections and nothing more.
Either than that, why will President Akufo-Addo impose a partial lockdown with the objective of halting the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country, at a time we had only recorded 137 cases across just four (4) regions of the country and with 5 deaths, but turn around to lift the partial lockdown, at a time our positive case count has galloped to 1,042, across ten (10) regions and with nine (9) deaths?
Countries with far lower cases have not lifted or relaxed their lockdown restrictions. Yet, we who are currently the country with the highest COVID-19 cases in West Africa, have against expert advice, lifted our partial lockdown. Doesn’t this defy science and commonsense?
President Akufo-Addo’s decision to lift the lockdown at this crucial time, is a reckless political gamble that portends great danger for this nation. Ghanaians must never forgive him if this unimaginable decision exacerbates our COVID-19 situation. The blame for any fatality that is occasioned by this reckless decision must lie squarely with the President.
What the President has essentially done, is to place political expediency ahead of Public safety. And what that shows, is that human lives don’t matter to President Akufo-Addo.
May God be our help.
SAMMY GYAMFI Esq.

Sammy Gyamfi is causing more harm to the Umbrella Familiy. The earlier the NDC Gurus remove him as propagande secretary the better for the party to have a solid prepration and a better chance for the upcoming December 2020 presidential and parlementary elections. "This man doenst reflect his ideas before he talks to the public" and this is causing more harm to the Party. What is politically motivated with the Presidnet speech of lifting the lock down of the two regions in Ghana? And how can you describe the speech as "totally premature and lacks scientific bases" Even a student of SHS will not make such unwaranted and unpolitical comments. One beginns to wonder if Sammy Gyamfi even research into issues relating with the global events. I dont think so and this is causing more harm to the party.Others have discovered and considered him as half baked politician!!, without solid political foundation based on experince. Please, remember that our neigbouring west african country, Repulic of Mali has been able to conduct presidential and parlamentary elections amidst COVID 19 and rebel insurgence in that country. That country has been succesful. Many countries have gradually and cautiuosly uplifted lock downs just as the president of the republic of Ghana has done. I am asking the Gurus of the Umbrella family to remove this Mr. Sammy Gyamfi, as propagande secretary, before we go for polls or you send him for political and psychological schooling. He needs political education to upgrade his philosophical thinking so that he can represent the NDC party not only in Ghana but also on the global level. The simple message of saving life and preventing the spread of the virus is nothing but keeping to the rules of "social physically distancing" despite the uplifting the lockdown.
Esq. Papapaaaaa. Wo Y3 tough, see how you send shivers to their spine. You Dey form, anytime you speak see how they roll over themselves. just watch over your shoulders eeerh, npp is planning evil big time against you.
Mr. Kwame Larbi, thank you for your submission. Let me however, add that you should not forget how Mahama got his money otherwise you are ledning credence to his saying that Ghanaians are forgetful. Just to add to your submission....John Ford Mahama got his money from the Airbus deal and quite recently the power deal from Turkey where the US Securities and Exchanges Commission has gone to court over. He is just donating the items to cover up his shame. Let him donate....at least it is the taxpayers' money he willfully embezzled and now using it to do his campaign sort of. John Ford Airbus Akonfewm Drosmani Mahama is just a chief ***barred word***.
My check just now on Worldometer,Nigeria of a population of about 150 million has tested only 7,153 with test/1 million people being only 35. Ghana has done through our able medical officers has done 68,591 representing 2,207 test per 1 million population. Foe your information most of the French speaking African countries have done nothing in terms of testing. Lets give credit to our Leaders, frontline workers, contact tracing team etc. and stop this politics. You claim to be a learned person but listening to a kayayie yesterday sound more sensssible than most of the people in NDC. Those of us who listen to TV3. Let me update you since you people do not like to read; 1 Cameroon has 1,017 positive cases with 42 death and zero testing 2.Tunisia has 879 positives 38 death and 16,098 test rep. 1,362 test per 1 million population 3.Ivory Coast has 847 cases with 9 death and zero testing 4.Niger has 648 cases with 20 death and 4,715 testing rep.195 test / 1 million population 5.Nigeria has 627 with 21 death 6.Guinea with 579 cases with 5 death and zero testing 7. Burkina Faso has 576 with 36 death and Zero testing. so stop trowing dust around Mr "learned Man"
Do you have to talk all the time? How many tests has Nigeria conducted to say they have less cases than we do? When some people entered illegally from Togo, weren’t some of them tested positive? Those people were not tested in Togo and as such never registered as cases of COVID-19 in that country. And once again you’ve shown how fearful you are of the voters’ register that you had to bring it up at this moment. That’s one reason why you want the coronavirus to stick around for as long as possible; the other two are that it gives you the opportunity to talk every day and it gives you a campaign lifeline. Esq. my foot.
The last time president extended locjdown, there was a news item attributed to Mahama that he has extended the lockdown to prevent him from campaigning. Tjhis statement was not denied as bieng false. Now he lifts the lockdown too you are complaining. go and campaign. "abayifuo asefuo"
see ***barred word***. so far, the government has acted in the most matured manner. spending so much even though he was left with far less. the financial fraud is being solve, various fake contracts are still being solved and many more. what else ? Nana has well. a leader in crises period.
Now I am convinced that , the reason why the president lifted the lock down is because former president is giving out a huge foodstuffs more than what the government is sharing. Shameful !
Every decision in this country must wear a political colour. When the lock down was announced you said the law was to allow the president to tap into other peoples phones. Now it is reversed, the reason is to compile voters register. You think we will continue to live in the world of deceit from you and your bunch of hypocrites. Has anyone sat down to ask where your leader got the over 1.7 million cedis used in buying all manner of PPEs for distribution across the country. Its a good gesture though but that should not escape you
