Deputy Communications Director for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mame Yaa Aboagye has touted the achievements of the New Patriotic Party in improving the living conditions of women.
According to her, the NPP is the only political party in Ghana that has placed women at the centre of all its policies and programmes.
Mame Yaa said, “The NPP has created and continues to create opportunities for women in politics. As stated earlier, during parliamentary primaries, female aspirants enjoy a 50% discount on the filing fee as a means to overcome financial barriers. President Akufo-Addo has also appointed women to certain key positions in government. Chief of Staff – the first female chief of staff in Ghana, Chief Justice from 2017 until her retirement in 2019, Attorney General, Secretary to the Cabinet, Women have also been appointed to serve at various levels of government- ministers of state, deputy ministers, CEOs of state institutions, municipal chief executives."
To her, the involvement of women in politics in Ghana is imperative.
She was of the view that women can better help to fight in the interest of women and children.
“Women make up over 50% of the population, so to have women in politics is to have a more representative political environment. Indeed, as nurturers, women are also more likely to aggressively pursue the interests of children and the vulnerable in society.”
“Women (girls), who form the majority of Ghanaians, are the biggest beneficiaries of the free SHS policy, and we are promising to enhance it. When they graduate and go to tertiary institutions, we are giving them guarantor free loans so that the issue of cost as a barrier will also be eliminated at the tertiary level. Our commitment to further expand the Ghana School feeding programme, Increase the disbursement of MASLOC funds/loans to more women applicants (targeting over 80%) than men. Significantly increase the allocation to LEAP and ensuring regular monthly disbursements targeting female-headed households. Continue to revamp the NHIS to make it more efficient in ensuring quality and affordable healthcare to its subscribers majority of whom are women. We will ensure the enactment and operationalization of the Ageing Bill as well as the Affirmative Action Bill. We will increase our support for women-owned businesses which employ many female workers. We will support local businesses involved in the production of sanitary pads,'' she added.
