A Member of the NDC Legal and Communications Team, Lawyer Godwin Edudzie Tamakloe, has described the current EC Chairperson, Mrs Jean Mensa as the greatest threat to the country's democratic experiment.
The lawyer holds the opinion that the decision to allow only the use of Ghana card as the identification document for registration will disenfranchise millions of potential voters.
As at Thursday, August 4th, the National Identification Authority has registered over 17million (17,138,609), but not all registered persons will receive their cards.
According to the NIA, of the above figure, some 571,149 registered Ghnaians have not had their Ghana Cards printed out.
Speaking on Okay FM's Ade Akye Abia prograame, he explained that there are a lot of Ghanaians who have undergone the registration process for a Ghana card, yet through no fault of theirs, have not been issued with their card.
"Therefore when the Electoral Commission decides to use the Ghana card as the only identification document for registration of a voter's id card, you may end up disenfranchising eligible voters who have not been to register for the Ghana card," he stated.
The EC has dismissed reports that it will compile a new register for the 2024 Elections.
Maintaining that the register which was compiled for the 2020 Election was still credible, the Commission says it was instead putting in place measures to ensure the continuous registration of persons onto the register.
Director of Electoral Services at the EC, Dr Serebour Quaicoe, says the new registration process would rely on the Ghana card as a base document to register new persons.
“So, what we are saying is that, if people are going to register any day at our district offices, then they need some credible form of identification and it is possible that once it is going to be continuous the political parties will not be there to be guaranteeing or objecting to," he said.

"Therefore when the Electoral Commission decides to use the Ghana card as the only identification document for registration of a voter's id card, you MAY end up disenfranchising eligible voters who have not been to register for the Ghana card" How can anyone use a statement like this to say the EC chair is a threat to our democracy? Elections are over 2 years away, the NIA offices are open every day, and you are saying that during all this period, it is possible that some people will still not be able to get the Ghana card? So what identification should they use, and how will they get that? Shameful and pathetic.
Nooonsense
The NDC's attitude towards practicing democracy is very very poor as an opposition political party. It lacks the intellect to appreciate the real essence of democracy in terms of the fundamental ramifications that come with the beauty of beholding to the diversity of opinions and yet respect the numbers that determine and make the decisions for the general interest without acrimony, but taking them in good faith. How can Mrs. Jean be a threat to our democratic assertions? This assertion is diabolic in the sense of a reaction formation when a person puts up a defense attitude at a conscious level to condemn and repress his wish, just like a latent homosexual coming out strongly to denounce homosexuality. I believe the good people of Ghana see in Jean a hard-working EC who is determined to execute her mandate credibly
If you are going to level unnecessary criticisms against Chair of the E C please learn how to spell her surname correctly in the first place. Tut! Tut!
It seems like whoever joins NDC looses his thinking cap. They will oppose every good initiative that will move the country forward. The y told their people not to register while their leaders nicodemously registered. They opposed the last registration, and swore with their blood, but eventually the registration took place and we didnt see their blood; ***barred word***! Instead of opposing the Ghana card as the sole document if identification for the voters register, why dont they educate their people to to go register? 2024 registration and voting is 2 years away, why cry wolf NDC nation wreckers Truly NDC is a threat to Ghana's peace and stability. I DECLARE THAT ndc shall extinct and become irrelevant like the CPP.
Gradually the FREE SHS will make your party irrelevant. Because many people will be able to read, write and understand you propaganda and wicked intentions. Are you not the same party with people like you who told your followers NOT to register for the Ghana Card? What changed?
NDC and concert
These same NDC leaders told their followers not to go for the Ghana card when it was rolled out. Now they are complaining. President Kuffour stated the Ghana card in 2008 and NDC came to power and never issue a single card in 8 years. NDC nation wreckers
The Ghana Card identifies us as Ghanaian and I support the fact that it must be the only card for an individual to register as a voter so we can have only Ghanaians voting for our leaders and not an election for all West Africans.
