Head of Linguistics at the University of Ghana, Professor Kofi Agyekum has asked the new appointees to the Electoral Commission, Dr. Peter Appiahene and Hajia Salima Ahmed Tijani, to reconsider their appointment following objections by the Civil Society.
The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has called for the immediate resignation of Dr Peter Appiahene and Hajia Salima Ahmed Tijani from the Electoral Commission.
They have accused Dr. Appiahene of being an NPP activist and Hajia Salima Ahmed also of having some strong ties with NPP as her relatives share affiliation with the party.
“We are painfully aware that voluntary and constitutionally grounded revocation of these unfortunate and democratically problematic EC appointments by the President is extremely unlikely. However, nothing stops the affected appointees, namely Dr Peter Appiahene and Hajia Salima Tijani from voluntarily and honourably resigning from the EC.
“This will be in the supreme interest of our country’s continued democratic progress, election peace and credibility and indeed overall national interest,” CODEO said in a press conference.
Addressing the issue on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" show, Prof. Kofi Agyekum noted that the above-mentioned persons should take a deep thought about the objections and advise themselves to take the right decision in order to end the brouhaha.
To him, it should be okay for them to step down for peace to reign.
Speaking to host Kwami Sefa Kayi, Prof. Kofi Agyekum advised Dr. Appiahene and Hajia Salima saying "I would resign if it is because of me that these controversies will go on".
