Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful Kennedy Agyapong has rejected the calls by a group of his supporters to run as an independent in the 2024 elections.
This comes after Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia defeated Mr. Agyapong in the NPP’s presidential primary election which saw close to 200,000 delegates vote to choose between four candidates.
The Vice president polled 61.47% of the total votes, beating Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Francis Addai-Nimoh, and Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto to become the NPP’s presidential candidate for the 2024 polls.
The group’s chairperson, Kwabena Yankey, during a news conference held on Tuesday, said “We the supporters of Kennedy Agyapong, representing 37 percent of the NPP delegates, wish to inform the general public that Kennedy Agyapong needs to be the next president of Ghana. We are advocating for Kennedy Agyapong, and we urge him to stand as an independent candidate for a massive win in 2024.”
He continued that “Kennedy Agyapong renowned for his outspoken nature and unwavering love, has demonstrated his dedication through his actions and spearheaded the establishment of companies that employ 7,000 workers.
His initiative to construct a state-of-the-art cardio hospital whose investment surpasses $7 million underscores his commitment to the well-being of Ghana’’.
He added, “Despite the recent setbacks within the NPP, we continue to believe that supporting him as an independent candidate is crucial for Ghanaians to foster growth, innovation, and the social welfare of the nation.”
But, Kennedy Agyapong speaking at the USA edition of ‘Showdown Thanksgiving Party’ in Minnesota, on December 2, 2023, assured his supporters that he is not going to leave the NPP.
The Member of Parliament for Assin Central said “I’m still an NPP [member]. We will continue to fight. We are not going to give up. I will sit in there and make the changes. I will be in there and make the changes. So, you should be rest assured’’.
According to him, “… there are speculations that on December 4, Kennedy Agyapong is going to make a press conference. I will be here (Minnesota, USA) on December 4, so this kind of speculations I’m not in for that. NPP people should be rest assured that Kennedy Agyapong is still an NPP’’.
He added, “I will continue to be NPP but Ghana first. If you are NPP and you make a mistake I will tell you”.
“You shouldn’t give up because you were supporting Kennedy Agyapong and he lost, no! Maybe this is a preparation. I probably trusted people too much so now I’m learning. I thought I was perfect but with this election, I know I’m not so I’m learning a lot. Nobody should be worried about whatever happened,” he said.
However, he urged his supporters not to be discouraged by the fact that he did not win the NPP presidential primaries, adding that he has learnt his lessons and will come back stronger.

Well said @Koo. People don't really know him well and that's why they want to make the same mistake they made with Akuffo addo. Ken is just in to steal Ghana's money, simple. To the discerning mind the proof is simple. This guy instigated violence against a journalist who exposed corruption. The said journalist was subsequently murdered brutally. Those pointing to companies he has created and all that bull. His companies only exist and seem to thrive because NPP is in power. So he is using Ghana's money to run his businesses. If it's about businesses one has that qualifies him for president then Elon Musk or Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg should be President of the world
I like Kennedy Agyapong for one thing. His love for the NPP is unmatched. Unfortunately the party is in the hands of selfish, inward looking and greedy people at the moment. My advice to Kennedy Agyapong is that going forward he should watch his utterances in public because he's a potential presidential candidate for the NPP in the near future . He easily loses his cool and start saying anything without considering the future consequences of his words. Ghanaians normally do not like people who brag about their wealth, children and properties in general. Scarcely will you hear very rich people like Osei Kwame despite,( Despite), Mc Dan, Alhaji Asumah Banda, (Antrak) Ibrahim Mahama( Enginers and Planners) , Sam Jonah ( Jonah Capital), Oteng Gyasi ( Tropical cables), Kwesi Oppong ( iron rods) openly discussing how rich they are publicly. Ken should learn from them. The just ended NPP presidential primaries is enough indication that Ken has a lot of admirers in the party and that they appreciate his contributions to the party over the years unlike some who have never contributed anything but simply because they find themselves in key positions today they think the party is theirs. No wonder most of the MMDCEs in the just ended orphan constituency primaries lost because the delegates heard some unpopular appointees were backing them. If you are a minister, deputy minister, MMDCE , CEO or presidential staffer for all these years ,and yet still the NPP cannot win majority votes in the polling station where you vote, it clearly means " you are not fit for purpose " . Whose polling stations should the NPP win to come to power for you to continue to be a minister, deputy minister, MMDCE or CEO? You are a minister, deputy minister, MMDCE, CEO or presidential staffer but have no biological children of your own who is/ are 18 years old and above to queue to vote for the NPP to win power. So who's 18 year old and above children are you relying on to vote for the NPP to " break the 8" for you to continue to be a minister, deputy minister, MMDCE, CEO or presidential staffer? Those arrogant appointees in this category should ask themselves this simple question. They better humble themselves. Left to them alone, the party will never win any elections because they don't have the numbers. Those hunting for money like poachers in a game reserve hunting for game should line up their monies on 7 th December, 2024 at the polling stations and command the money to vote for the NPP , hahahaaaa. Human beings are more important than money, power and influence. The earlier they realize this the better. If they don't change their ways, " change will change them"
Following Ken is like making friends with an arm robber. He will do everything to raise your hopes and trust, but when you bring him to your house he will steal all the properties in your house. This man raised the Hope's of most Ghanaians that he will be independent minded if voted for as flagbearer. He said everything against the government yet after losing, he claims he will still support the same people he said were very terrible. He's never credible, has no principles and integrity.
This is a mark of a true democrat. He is not like that butterfly who thought the leadership of the NPP was is his birth right. He has indeed learnt his lessons and will not be lead by hypocrite that will just want to ride on his back for their own agenda to chop his money.
