It was glitz and glamour on Saturday, July 2 when 20 graduating students from the Fashion and Design Department of the Radford University College (RUC) mounted the stage to showcase exquisite clothing line they have designed.
The event, dubbed the Graduates Fashion Show 2016 which came off at the Kempinski Hotel in Accra, was to give the fashion students the platform to exhibit their designs.
The graduates exhibited samples of some of their clothing designs to the admiration of parents, students and staff.
Fashion Design is an integral part of the RUC’s curricula. It has produced graduates, some of whom are making it big on the international market.
Speaking at the sidelines of the show, Chairman of the University, Nana Dwomoh Sarpong said the annual event is aimed at showcasing to the world the creativity of their students.
He said the university apart from training students also empowers them with employable skills which help them compete with the international world.
“Each student is supposed to provide at least ten designs based on various inspirations. Ghanaians are very talented, so when we train them they can design beautiful clothing and compete with the rest of the world.”
Mr. Dwomoh noted that “when you come to Radford, we train you as a whole person; on how to set up your own business and to be a good entrepreneur. We also make sure that you don’t leave Radford without your own business.”
He called on government to develop a sustained programme to support fashion and design graduates in the country.
This, he said is to enable them set up their own business rather than relying on government for employment.
Nana Dwomoh Sarpong later revealed that Radford University through fashion has chalked a lot of successes.
According to him, the best fashion design graduate of the RUC last year, Papa Oppong was featured in the CNN international news network and is currently in the United States mounting various exhibitions.
The RUC Chairman is convinced if government invests in the fashion industry, it can generate a lot of foreign exchange for the country.
