Bubbly twin gospel singers, the Tagoe Sisters, were in high spirits at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Accra last week where a series of activities to mark their 30-year involvement with music ministry was launched.

The well-attended event was chaired by Nana Aggrey, the CEO of Budget Cash and Carry who launched the anniversary celebration.

As part of the celebration, there will be a dinner-dance at the Banquet Hall of the State House on September 3 to raise funds for the Tagoe Twins Foundation and a mega gospel show on November 20 at the Accra International Conference Centre to climax the activities. The duo will also have shows in some selected regions as part of the celebration.

The launch was held on their birthday and the sisters treated the audience to a couple of songs from their repertoire, sending everyone on their feet to sing and dance along. The twins used the opportunity to tell how it all started for them.

“By 1979 we had toured with groups like Advent Heralds and taken part in big music shows throughout the country. We performed at crusades and became a part of evangelist Abraham De-Love’s team, travelling all over the country with him, though we had had a brief foretaste of national exposure with appearances on GTV programmes such as All Shades and Voices in Rhytmn,” they said.

With encouragement from Evangelist Rev. Francis Amoako whom they described as a friend, great benefactor, daddy and mentor, the sisters recorded their debut album Nyame Ye Kese in 1988 in London with a team of crack musicians including Bessa Simons and Alfred Bannerman.

The success of that release was phenomenal and made the sisters extremely the popular on the music scene. “When the history of Ghanaian gospel music comes to be written, we will go down as one of the pioneers of the game,” they proudly said.
