The second edition of Anansefest has been launched at the National Theatre in Accra.
Anansefest is a national film festival organised by The Ananseman Playhouse for students in second cycle institutions. This year’s event, which is in collaboration with Buster Films Denmark, will be telecast on Ghana Television for a 13-week period and will climax with an awards ceremony in September, 2013.
The Deputy Minister of Environment, Science and Technology and Innovation, Dr Bernice Adiku-Heloo, said she had been touched by the initiative taken by the crew of Anansefest to entertain and educate the youth. “There are areas films can be used to address development. The organisers of Anansefest are encouraged to do their best to address social issues by indulging the youth,” she said.
According to the artistic Director of The Ananseman Playhouse, Mr Wakefield Ackuaku, the festival has come to stay purposely for the youth even though there have not been any other event since the first one in the year 2009. He explained that it was due to the lack of funds. He said reportage on the film industry was not encouraging.
“More media houses are interested in reporting other events which they deem important than the acting industry”. He said Ananseman Playhouse aimed at being the best production house in Africa in the next five to 10 years.
Activities for Anansefest include national and regional launches, workshops, seminars, lectures and students’ forums, fashion and road shows
Some of the participating schools for this year’s event are Apam Senior High, Chemu Senior High, Krobo Girls Senior High, Labone Senior High, St. Peter’s Senior High, Tema International, among others.
Guests who were present to grace the occasion included the former Mayor of Accra, Mr Nat Nunoo Amarteifio and a representative from the Ghana Education Service, Mr Francis Aguri.
