Okyeame Kwame and his team of dedicated medical personnel from MDS-Lancet Laboratory last Saturday screened 700 people for Hepatitis B in Obra Spot, Accra to mark World Hepatitis Day which fell on July 28.
The Okyeame Kwame Foundation started the journey to help curb Hepatitis B in Ghana in 2009 shortly after he was crowned Artiste of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards. He has since been involved in helping and creating awareness about the disease.
The free screening last Saturday was under the theme: This is Hepatitis, Know It, Confront it. The Medical team from MDS-Lancet Laboratories Ghana Limited led by its Chief Executive, Dr Paul Sekyere-Nyantakyi screened and counselled the people depending on the results of the test.
Minister of Health, Ms Sherry Ayitey attended the screening and advised the public on the need to go for screening. Few days before the screening when the rapper led a team to her office, Ms Ayitey promised governments involvement in the exercise in 2014.
Due to the huge publicity this years screening received, many Ghanaians of all walks of life made it to the venue to be screened. Some came from Tamale, Cape Coast, Kumasi and surrounding areas.
When it got to the advertised time for the screen to end, there were still many in the queue waiting for their turn, this forced the rapper and Dr Paul Sekyere-Nyantakyi to issue out a note to 300 people to visit any of the MDS-Lancet Laboratory branches for free screening.
The screening was powered by One Mic Entertainment and supported by the MTN Foundation, Ghana Web Ventures, Japan Motors, DDP and Vitamilk. Media partners included Radio Gold, Live FM, GhanaGist.Com, ENewsGH.com, Ghanaweb.com, Nydjlive.com, peacefmonline.com.
