A Tema based Lawyer and a connoisseur has observed a fashion trend emerging among Ghanaians that mimics President Nana Akufo-Addo’s sense of fashion.
“I have observed with delight the popularity of shirts made from local prints among men, both young and old. It looks good on them. We are seeing another Kalyppo effect. No wonder the President likes wearing them. They are colourful and dignifying,”Mr Mathias Kwasi Yakah said.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency on politics and fashion, he said, “We have seen many of our leaders preach that we should patronize locally manufactured products but they do otherwise. In the case of President Akufo-Addo, he is relentless when it comes to wearing these beautiful shirts. He leads by example.”
According to Mr Yakah, the demand for these shirts is picking up and would soon dominate the local fashion setting adding that” among other things, it would have a big impact on the value of our local textile and tailoring which would eventually result in job creation.”
He said: “The President is telling the whole world to come and see what we wear in Ghana. He has endeared himself to connoisseurs. The energy emitting from his sense of fashion would certainly pull all of us along.
I hope that in the near future, he would help stir up the Ghanaian food culture by publicly patronizing a local dish. Don’t forget that he made kalyppo popular. Let’s get the best out of him. He is an idea whose time has come.”

I don't know why a lawyer like would like to through dust in our eyes, it is not because i am an NDC activist, the wearing of this shirt date back 1990, where were you when we were promoting Adwoa yankee (Tie & die). Can the current trend be compared to the like of John Dramani Mahama in a smock, to the extend that then candidate Akufo Addo has to force himself to wear some pls give us a break and create the Jobs u promised ghanaian.
That is exactly so Mr. Lawyer and just like me now living in Australia is fighting very hard to get different types of those shirts to wear here so if anyone can direct me to where I can order them to be posted here in Australia I will be very much grateful. Please contact my son Sly on 0248844749.
THIS NEW TREND BY NANA AKUFO ADDO AND THE NPP SHOULD LEAD TO A BAN ON IMPORTATION OF OBRONI WAAWU, TO CREATE JOBS FOR OUR TAILORS AND WAX PRINT SELLERS.
You must be out of the country when the late vice president Allieu Mahama add his voice of we using it as FRIDAY WEAR' where were you then? 2015 -2016 the economy were so bad that it was no interest of wearing please as Nana ALL DIE BE DIE
Whether fried or boiled it's called egg!So long as NPP introduced the traditional wears as "FRIDAY DAY WEAR",and Ghanaians are happily using it,they deserve the credit,so it doesn't matter even if the gentleman commends the first gentleman for his sense of fashion.NPP and its root has always been the pacesetters,no wonder whenever they're in power Ghana blossoms and develops.God bless our homeland Ghana
Give credit where its due. Wax print as official office wear popular way back in 2004, one year after Alan Kyerematen assumed office at MOTI and launched a National Friday wear policy in all 10 regions to increase use of wax print to save jobs in Textile Industry. It was complemented by a ban on textile imports by land, air or sea freight except through Takoradi Port and the purchase and revival of production of the defunct gray baft manufacturing factory - JUAPONG textiles ltd to ensure a steady stream of raw materials to textile printing factories. Lets give credit were its due. Some have erroneously said branding it "Friday wear" restricts its use to one day in the week despite the abundant evidence that Ghanaians started wearing wax print casual and official wear 24/7 all week and all ear round. This also enabled the textile companies to start selling fabric by the yard instead of 12 yards apiece. Of course the President's support has been consistent and admirable but lets give credit to original ideas.
the npp instituted Friday wear during president Kuffour administration led by Alan cash. the npp has another opportunity to lead by example to expand the Ghanaian economy with the president sense of local fashion we must commend him. cloth sellers ,tailors/seamstress businesses are booming indeed.
