Miss Mariam Naa Abbey, Miss Road Safety 2011, has called on motorists to endeavour to observe road traffic regulations at all times, especially during celebrations for the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON).
She said vehicle drivers must avoid drunk driving and motor bike riders should also remember to wear their helmets.
A statement signed and copied to Ghana News Agency by her cautioned soccer fans not to over rejoice when the Black Stars beat their Botswana counterpart in their first encounter.
She said: “typical soccer seasons as the AFCON are characterize by empty streets during matches involving the senior team, until there is a cause to celebrate then jubilant fans flood the streets.”
It said some wave their national flags, sound the popular ‘vuvuzelas’ as loud as they could amidst singing and dancing.
“In some cases, roads are blocked to hold pleasure events and the youth especially, engage in unsafe driving and riding antics among other forms of hooliganism on our streets,” it added.
The statement re-called the recent tragedy that hit the people of Senya Breku, claiming 27 lives and leaving several others injured, and urged the citizenry to leave the streets out when it comes to celebrations.
It said players of the senior team had signed up unto championing the cause of road safety and would not be delighted to be the reason for a rather appalling story to be told about road safety in the country.
"Let us boost the morale of the Stars by being sensitive to the road safety concerns."
