A presidential aspirant of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Mr Bright Akwetey, has called on the National Communication Authority (NCA) to revoke the license of any radio station that would be used to foment tribal hatred.
He also asked President J.E.A. Mills to ensure that anybody who uttered words calculated to incite one tribe against the other to be ruthlessly dealt with. The CPP Presidential aspirant made the call when he met a section of the Eastern Region Press Corps at Koforidua.
Mr Akwetey, who was in the Eastern Regional capital to meet delegates of the CPP to solicit for their vote for the party’s flagbearership at the upcoming congress, expressesed his abhorrence for and castigated politicians who used the power of the radio to incite one tribe against the other.
The CPP Presidential aspirant, who was apparently referring to the utterances of Mr Kennedy Agyapong, MP for Assin North, who was alleged to have made a hate broadcast based on ethnicity, suggested that any radio station that would be used in that respect must have its license revoked immediately.
President Mills, he further indicated, must also be firm to deal with such issues to preserve the unity of the country.
Mr Akwetey, who was not happy about political events in the country, following the alleged hate broadcast of the Assin North MP, expressed disappointment that the NPP flag bearer had not openly condemned the alleged hate broadcast, although many of the top leaders of the NPP had spoken on the issue condemning it.
He contended that it was the inability of President Mills to show firmness on the issue and Nana Akufo Addo to also come out openly to condemn it that made supporters of the NPP to throng the Police Headquarters where Mr Agyapong was initially held as well as the courts which were trying him, thus making somebody charged with treason a hero.
Mr Akwetey, who called on the NPP to call its members and supporters to order, said the other political parties must also do same in the future to prevent the country from sliding into chaos.
