TV Series More Lucrative Than Movies

For some reason, it looks like producers are going for television series rather than full length movies and various reasons are being given for this trend.

Some have attributed it to the fact that it is more lucrative to produce television series while others believe that it is simply the in-thing. Showbiz spoke to a few industry players who gave their views on the trend.

Movie producer, Abdul Salam Mumuni of Venus Films Productions told Showbiz last Tuesday that TV series bring in more revenue than movies, the reason for which producers are opting for them now.

“There is more market for TV series than movies and the television stations prefer series to movies because of content.

“You see, TV series run for a very long time and that is the content television stations are looking for,” he said.

According to Salam, when it comes to movies, the producer premieres it and puts it online and that is end of story, unlike series which can be continued for a long time.

“There is no more DVD market so we are shooting series for the television stations”, he added.

Though Salam admitted that his outfit is shooting both movies and series, he did not hesitate to say that television series is the in-thing now.

On his part, actor, Adjetey Annang, also believes that television series have taken over and producers are relegating features to the background.

“That is what is happening now, producers prefer shooting series to full length feature films and I think it is because the latter is capital intensive.

“When it comes to series, television stations cover a percentage of the cost and when they approach us, we don’t charge our usual professional fees, we don’t charge too much,” he said.

Adjetey concedes that when it comes to capital, it is easier to go into series than movies.

“At the moment I am doing both series and movies I shot a movie not too long ago and I have about three coming up while I am also shooting series,” he said.

When Showbiz contacted Martha Ankomah, she opined that movie production has gone down because of Internet Rights, “the producers put their movies online and movie lovers go online to watch them.”

Martha believes the trend can change if the right structures are put in place. “We need investors and sponsorship. I think the corporate bodies should come on board to support the movie industry because it is done in other places. Individuals and corporate bodies support financially in the production of movies,” she said.

“I believe when we are supported financially, we can produce movies that people can watch to transform their lives.

“There should be money for promotion and advertising so that a lot of noise can be made about the movies.”

“Also, we need people with technical know-how, actors and actresses ought to be managed well. These aside, we need people to go out and research and know what kind of movies people love to watch so that producers will know exactly what to put out there.

“All these contribute to the success of the movie industry. And all these can be done well if funding is available” she concluded.
