The Enquirer has learnt that the former Minister of Health, Major Courage Quashigah (rtd), who is being investigated by the Serious Fraud Office in respect of the circumstances surrounding the award of contracts, has been rushed out of the country to Israel to ostensibly seek emergency medical attention for a yet-to-be disclosed ailment.
It is however believed that Mr. Quashigah who has declared his intention to run for President on the ticket of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), is most likely suffering from stroke, exacerbating a decade long waist problem. This is about the second time the former health minister has run out of the country “for medical attention.
A source at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA) told the Enquirer that Major Quashigah who was the last Health Minister in the Kufuor-led administration, was reeling under server pain prior to his departure and had to be assisted by one of his children.
Major Quashigah has for years had a waist problem, which he claims is attributable tothis long years of incarceration during the military era, when he was suspected of plotting a coup against the government. But Mr. Quashigah prefers to be called a coup crusher rather than a coup maker.
As a result of the pain, the former health minister had to leave the country, using the VVIP lunge, The Enquirer newspaper learnt. It was not clear whether his wife, Mrs. Gertrude Quashigah, a professional caterer was also on board the aircraft. The US-trained ranger, who served as Minister for Food and Agriculture before his last appointment as Health Minister was hauled before the Serious Fraud office (SFO) over a contract for the maintenance of health institutions, which was awarded under very strange circumstances.
Insiders revealed that although the job was not executed, payment was advanced to an official of the Health Ministry, who was to have supervised the execution of the job, but ended up forming two companies and awarding the contract to himself. Major Quashigah is mocked within military circles, for saying that Mallam (a spiritual Muslim spiritualist), had prophesized to him that he would one day be head of state of Ghana, and rightly or wrongly he is seen sometimes chasing this prophecy.
