Despite returning home without his Bantamweight title, hundreds of fans from the boxing family gave Joseph Agbeko a heroic welcome last Saturday at the Kotoka International Airport.
The dethroned International Boxing Federation champion, who lost his belt through a bizarre decision by referee Russell Mora in a bout against Abner Mares in Las Vegas, arrived at the VIP Lounge four hours later than the original 11.30am scheduled time.
Notwithstanding the flight delay, the fans kept their cool in anticipation till he finally arrived in a white Polo shirt with a happy birthday inscription in commemoration of his younger daughter Keirans 5th milestone.
To Agbeko, the decision by IBF for the December 14 rematch is refreshing, saying, I am glad IBF has realized that what happened on that fateful day was wrong and consequently arranged for a rematch.
It is an opportunity to prove that I am the true champion, I am here to put a few things together, train harder before the December challenge, he added. He thanked all who in diverse ways supported him and pledged to reclaim his lost crown.
He was met on arrival by officials of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, National Sports Authority, the Ghana Boxing Authority as well as his two pretty daughters Keiran and Beyonce Agbeko.
Also referred to as Torgbi Kaletor, Agbeko has since been lodging at the Golden Tulip Hotel where he meets the media today for a press conference.
