A Nigerian boxer, Eddie Ndukwu Jnr., has been left hospitalised after weighing-in for his bout a reported 10 kilogrammes lighter than his Ghanaian bantamweight opponent Felix William.
According to an eyewitness, Ndukwu was pummelled by William till he lost consciousness in the said bout which happened at the Second South Boxing Gym in Accra.
The boxer was visibly weak and could barely sit on his mattress when Graphic Sports paid him a visit at the Police Hospital in Accra.
Ndukwu Jnr., the son of former Nigerian featherweight boxer, Eddie Ndukwu, could hardly speak when questions were posed to him.
Present at the hospital was former Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) vice-president, Jonas Ahene Truly, who declined to comment on the issue.
However, GBA President, Peter Zwennes, confirmed that the bout, promoted by Landmark Promotions, was sanctioned by the GBA but could also not confirm whether the boxer weighed in at 10 Kilogrammes below the approved weight for the bout.
He added that, the GBA was closely monitoring the situation and would be on hand to assist the boxer should the need arise.
�Yes the fight was a GBA sanctioned bout but I can�t confirm at the moment if Ndukwu Jnr. was 10 kilogrammes lighter than his opponent, Felix William,� Zwennes added.
