A FAN was beaten to death last night before England's victory over Wales at Wembley. The victim was a Cardiff fan. Six men, all from Wales, were arrested as cops searched the away section of the stadium.

The dead man, named online as married Mike Dye, 44, suffered head injuries in the assault and had a heart attack outside the ground.

Detectives launched a murder investigation following the clash.

The victim was rushed to a North London hospital where medics battled in vain to save him. London Ambulance Service said it got a call at 7.20pm to reports of an assault, and staff on stand-by at the Euro 2012 qualifier were on the scene within three minutes.

A spokesman said: "Extensive efforts were made to resuscitate the patient and he was taken to hospital."

The Met Police said: "A man was taken to hospital suffering from head injuries. "He was pronounced dead at 8.50pm.

"Six people have been arrested. Inquiries are ongoing. We understand the victim and suspects are all Wales supporters." Mr Dye, who worked for Cardiff Council's highways department, posted regularly on Cardiff City web forums.

He travelled to the match on a coach from Cardiff with other Wales fans. Wales midfielder Joe Ledley, who played last night, wrote on Twitter: I can't believe a Welsh fan has been murdered tonight, shocking. My thoughts go out to his family."

Another said: "It's a disgrace that these things happen at and around football. RIP Mike Dye.

"No one deserves to get beaten to death for going to a match."
