Former Board member of Kumasi Asante Kotoko and a respected figure in Ghanaian soccer circles, Kennedy ‘Cappuccino’ Agyepong aka Kenpong, lost the bid to buy the first copy of the relaunched Graphic Newspaper last Friday, with the CEO of Crystal TV carrying the day.
The relaunch of the national newspaper, which was performed by President John Dramani Mahama, was attended by top businessmen and the crčme-de-la-crčme of society.
Paul A. Crystal-Djirackor, owner of Crystal TV, bought the first copy for GH˘14,000, while Kennedy Agyepong took home the second copy for GH˘13,500.
Prince Kofi Amoabeng, president of UT Holdings, bought the third copy for GH˘10,000, with the managing director of Ghana Commercial Bank Simon Dornoo buying the fourth copy for GH˘8,000. All the copies were autographed by President John Mahama.
Giving a background to his association with the Graphic Communications Group, Kennedy Agyepong told DAILY GUIDE SPORTS in an interview that when the idea of a newspaper for Kumasi Asante Kotoko (Kotoko Express) was mooted, the club had no printing machine and had to rely on Graphic.
“I was a board member for Kotoko at the time, and Herbert Mensah led us to negotiate with Graphic.
“By the time P.V. Obeng came onboard, we were owing Graphic (Communications Group) a lot of money, but they allowed us to pay on installment basis, and the negotiation this time, was led by Acheampong Kyei, Chairman of GLICO at the time, and Amoako Hene, owner of Holiday Inn Hotel at Airport West, both board members of Kotoko,” disclosed Kennedy Agyepong, CEO of Kenpong Group of Companies.
He stressed that Kotoko Express, which is the mouthpiece of the Porcupine Warriors, would not have seen the light of day, had Graphic not supported the Kotoko paper.
“In that regard, it is only proper that I support Graphic when they are rebranding,” he concluded.
