As part of efforts to prepare a strong bid for the hosting of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), in 2017, the Minister of Youth and Sports Mahama Ayariga, on Thursday, inspected facilities at the University of Ghana, Stadium, Legon.

The move was to ensure an effective bid for Ghana to host AFCON 2017, as well as develop sports at all levels with the tertiary institutions being a key area.

The University of Ghana Stadium, with a capacity of 30,000 is one of the potential facilities earmarked for the competition.

Ayariga said, “For us to unearth the many talents at the universities, we will need the full complement of infrastructure at the universities. A university can boast of over 30,000 students and when you have such a huge number at one place, facilities present must be of standard so as to encourage them to use the materials to discover a lot of talents.

“We have a programme to go round all the universities and work with them to ensure that they develop their infrastructure. With the huge investments already made, we will take the necessary steps to secure the funding to complete them."

The Sports Director of the University of Ghana, Bella Bello Bitugu disclosed that, “The block work is 90% done and the overall project is half way through. The athletics track is complete and ready for use.We have offices, shops, two uncompleted hotels for visiting teams if there is a match, conference rooms, VIP stand, police control area, flood lights and score board and seats have been bought already. But unfortunately it's been rusting since it has been in storage for a period of time now.

There is a video scoreboard, external fire security , 14 TV broadcast , CCTV, irrigation system and telephone network system, external data transmission network, 617 power generating plant with another 1,134 generating power plant with a 2000 underground liter fuel capacity.

He added that even if Ghana does not win the bid, the stadium will be a huge opportunity for the university and the nation.
