The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Mr Kurt Okraku, says the association is closely working with the government to ensure the safe return of football after organised competitions were suspended by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo government in March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to him, the football governing body’s medical team, its General Secretary and the Competitions Department have jointly presented sound proposals to the government for a possible return of football in a safe manner.

In a statement to the clubs on Thursday, Mr Okraku noted the various developments his outfit had chalked up over the COVID-19 period to the clubs were a reflection of his commitment to the return of football.

Working with the government

“I have personally met with the Government Advisory Team on COVID-19, led by Dr Nsiah Asare to discuss the possible return of football and what we would require to actualise it, resulting in a discussion on a roadmap for the safe return of football.

“The Ministry of Health, Ghana Health Service and Government of Ghana have been very open and supportive in these deliberations," Mr Okraku said in the press statement published on the GFA’s website.

June 30 decision day

Mr Okraku explained that the FA’s Executive Council was considering factors to make a decision on the season on June 30.

“We continue to engage all key stakeholders, including WAFU, CAF, and FIFA at both the Committees, General Secretaries, and the President's level to ensure that our association is at the forefront of all discussions on the season and possible resumption dates for football," he noted.

All football activities were put under suspension in March following the COVID-19 pandemic which led to the government announcing restriction in movements in Accra and Kumasi.
