The President and Board Chairman of the Ghana Rugby Football Union (GRFU), Mr. Herbert Mensah has said the federation welcomes the return of contact sports in the country.

A ban was placed on all contact sports at the onset of the Coronavirus but after six months after, the government has lifted the ban as figures of the virus in the country keep falling. This was communicated by President Akufo-Addo in his seventieth address to the nation on Sunday 20th September 2020.

Speaking after President Akufo-Addo’s seventieth nationwide address yesterday, the renowned sports administrator cum businessman believes per the figures the country is getting of late shows that the fight against the devastating disease is on the winning path.

Mensah said The Ghana Rugby family is happy to resume. “The President spoke very well about the fact that contact sports can resume but we [Ghana Rugby] will think about it properly before coming out with structured ways to resume activities… We see it as a positive because we have lots of activities and tournaments in 2021 and need to prepare feverishly, we have world qualifications, Cape Town Sevens, etc.”, Mensah added

Herbert Mensah who is also the former chairman of Kumasi Asante Kotoko applauded the government for the handling of the novel Coronavirus disease, describing it as one of the best in the globe and said Ghana is doing a fantastic job in the fight against the pandemic and believed it based on innovative measures put in place by the government.

He welcomed the strategic easing of restrictions by the government but has urged Ghanaians to be mindful and continue adhering to the coronavirus safety protocols to help defeat the devastating disease completely.

Mensah also acknowledged the Ghana Rugby family on their conduct during these trying times and was thankful that all members who tested positive are now cured and in good health.

“Ghana is doing fantastic in the fight against the disease per the figures coming of late though some doubt the figures, we can’t play with death”. “I can say it’s a good work done, and the rest is on us to continue to adhere to the safety protocols… We should be mindful before things get to the worse way… We have to be mindful of our daily activities to help defeat the pandemic”, he said.
