Ghana successful hosted the Rugby Africa Sevens Championship with seven other African countries participating for a spot in the final round of the world cup qualifiers in April next year.

After two days of enthralling competition, Ghana had its male and female national rugby teams emerging victorious, hence qualifying for the final round of the world cup qualifiers in April, 2022.

Speaking to the pressmen after the event, Herbert Mensah expressed his excitement for “an extraordinary competition” which will go down in the history books of the union.

“It was an organization that was put together professionally. I’m happy for a successful event. We thank everyone who was involved, from the Asantehene, His Excellency the President and the Sports Ministry for supporting with Gh¢100,000.00. We [Ghana Rugby] thank everyone, even the ball boys and the customs officials who opened the borders for the teams, the drivers and every individual for the overwhelming support”, he said.

The renowned sports administrator went ahead to predict that by 2027, Ghana will be in pole position to qualify for the prestigious rugby world cup tournament.

According to him, should the leadership of the union be able to follow the measures put in place even in the next administration, then Ghana will be able to secure a qualification to the rugby world cup.

Even though Ghana is currently in contest for a ticket to represent Africa in the world cup, Herbert Mensah believes should the team fail to annex a qualification, with the current measures put in place, the country’s team will be ripe for the prestigious tournament by 2027.

“I believe Ghana will be able in pole position to compete in the world cup by 2026, 2027 if we are still in charge and follow the right procedures, not to win it but to enter into the World Cup”, Mr. Mensah said after the climax of the Rugby Africa Sevens Championship at the Paa Joe Stadium in Kumasi on Sunday, November 28, 2021.
