The chairman of the Ghana Football Association Ethics Committee, Nana Agyei Ampofo has 'stepped down' from his position after his Football Club was fingered in a bribery allegation by the Ghana Football Association, Ghanasportsonline.com can confirm.
Nana Ampofo, who is also the chairman and bankroller of Goaso-based Unity FC says he has decided to resign from his position to enable a thorough investigation into the matter.
Three Referees, Alex Akugre, Theophilus Akugre, Paul Aduko and Joshua are under investigations by the Ghana FA one count for accepting a bribe to fix a GN Bank Division one match between Unity FC and Bofoakwa played at Goaso on April 29.
But Nana Ampofo, who was expected to chair the hearing of the three referees and the other accomplice says he has decided to resign honourably for the case to be investigated as it involves his own club.
"I cannot still hold the position because I have read on the GFA site that someone within my club paid a bribe to referees to officiate a game in our favour", He told Atinka FM
"I have decided to step aside as the chairman of the ethics committee so that a good investigation can be conducted into the matter",
"I have not received any official letter from the quarters of the GFA though but I think this is the best decision, and I also want to confirm that the said person is not an official of my club but I said, I have decided to step down from the position so that they conduct a thorough investigation"
After the said match, while on their way from the Police Station to the Lorry Station in the car of a club official of Unity FC called Nii Lokko, he demanded an amount of Nine Hundred Ghana Cedis (GHc900.00) from the match officials and accused them of failing to “help” his club Unity FC to win the match as earlier agreed.
Nii Lokko is alleged to have said that he suspects that the away club gave the match officials more money and they returned the said amount to Nii Lokko in violation of the GFA Regulations.
