The former Ghana defender is set to take up his highest administrative role after an illustrious playing career.

Former Bayern Munich defender Samuel Osei Kuffour has been appointed chief executive officer of Asante Kotoko, Goal understands.

The ex-Black Stars defender is set to lead the administration of the 23-time Ghana Premier League champions, having previously served in the capacity of a board member.

Goal sources say, Kuffour was settled upon following a meeting with the owner and life patron of the club, the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on Saturday, and is thus, set to replace Samuel Opoku Nti following a poor season.

The Porcupine Warriors ended the calendar year without major silverware after losing to Hearts of Oak in the President’s Cup, to Medeama in the FA Cup final and to Ashanti Gold in the Otumfuo Cup, having as well failed to defend the league title won the season before.

The club also suffered a humiliating 2-1 home defeat and elimination at the hands of EL Eulma, now an Algerian second division side, in the first round of the 2015 Caf Champions League.

Currently a TV pundit, Kuffour played for Bayern Munich from 1993 to 2005, winning the 2001 Uefa Champions League as well as the 2001 Fifa Club World Cup.

He also spent time with Italian sides Roma and Livorno and Dutch side Ajax, before officially bowing out of the game with a testimonial encounter in 2011.

On the national level, he was a member of Ghana’s side that lifted the 1991 Fifa U17 World Cup and also won two silver medals at the 1993 Fifa U17 and Fifa U20 World Cups, as well as Bronze at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

He also featured in four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and the 2006 World Cup with the Black Stars.
