Football giants Kumasi Asante Kotoko have commemorated their 81st anniversary at the club’s secretariat in Kumasi.

The short ceremony, which was chaired by Nana Bantamahene Baffour Owusu Amankwatia VI (Sylvester Asare), a former Chief Executive, saw past and present management teams of the club come together with the playing body.

Kotoko are the most successful football club in Ghana with 22 league titles and nine FA Cup titles and are also two-time African champions.

Club board chairman Paul Adu-Gyamfi, speaking at the event, enumerated the great achievements of the club. “Kotoko are the first Ghanaian club to win a continental trophy and the only Ghanaian club to win the Champions League twice. Kotoko have won the league championships on 23 different occasions. We are the first to win the Champion of Champions trophy in Ghana. Our achievements caught the eye of the former President of FIFA, Sepp Blatter. He sent a congratulatory letter to Kotoko in 2014. Kotoko are the proud owner of the coveted Afro Cup of 1958 and are the first to be crowned African Club of the 20th Century.”

He revealed that the club had plans to set up a welfare scheme to cater to the needs of its retired players. “We intend to set up a fund for retired and old players. We intend to…use one per cent of gate proceeds for this purpose,” he revealed.
