But for the Black Stars exit at the round of 16 in the just-ended AFCON 2019, the Ghanaian taxpayers would have had to lose an additional $1.7 million.
Tunisia defeated the Stars on penalties in the round of 16, and at that stage, the country, according to the Sports Minister, Isaac Asiamah, had already spent $4.5 million.
The amount spent on the failed Black Stars was the same amount paid as prize money for the winner, Algeria.
Sports Minister, Isaac Asiamah, briefing Parliament Wednesday, July 24, 2019, disclosed that the country budgeted $6.3million.
However, with the knock out of the Black Stars at the 1/16 stage in a match against Tunisia, the country saved $1.7million.
The Minister provided the breakdown of the expenses incurred during Ghana’s participation in the tournament in Egypt which he acknowledged was “below expectations”.
According to him, Ghana hired coach Kwesi Appiah with a “clear mandate” to lead the Black Stars win the trophy and end a 37-year drought.

There was no budget b4 the tournament but he was able to manufacture a budget to match against the actual. And he said the budget was approved. approved by who? Asiamah is uselesss
You are as usuless as anything. Will never trust any politician. How could you spent 6.5m for 4.5m and even spent more than what would have been price money. ***barred word*** leader.
These "things" called politicians are just th.ieves and bandits! It simply doesn't make any sense no matter how you try to clean it up. How can such a poor country(at least from the perspective of the masses) like Ghana afford to doll out such overly generous bonuses to players who had the worst performance ever in a tourney? And the simple economic question: How can you budget over USD^milliom to chase USD4.5million which was the maximum prize money? And who approved such a swtupid budget! If it were their private businesses would they do that with their money? What is this country about? No wonder we are almost being drowned by debt. They borrow the money and just waste it! And we Ghanaians just helplessly watch on! Enough of the rot in this country perpetrated by both NPP and NDC! These two groups of evil parties have destroyed the country! Ghanaians we need to take back our country before it is too late! Enough is enough! We need to build a country that works for everybody and not just NPP/NDC affiliates!
