Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Hon. Kennedy Agyapong believes Asamoah Gyan can play an important role at the World Cup despite his age.
"He is an old man… but he can motivate the team...His presence alone will make a difference, so when they are going and they send old players along to motivate them, it can be a gamechanger. So the role of old players like Asamoah Gyan cannot be discounted, they must be sent to boost the morale of the young ones" he reportedly told Happy FM in a recent interview.
On Monday's edition of Peace FM's morning show 'Kokrokoo', Asamoah Gyan responded to Kennedy Agyepong and others who are requesting that he joins the team to Qatar.
He said even though "it's possible" he needs to lose weight and be physically fit.
To him, he must earn the call up back to the team but it shouldn't be an automatic pass for him to be enlisted in the Black Stars.
"I think I have to earn the call up. I have to get a team and be fit. For me, I think I have to earn the call up . . . I have to be fit physically . . . I feel I'm naturally gifted player who can do anything on the field but physically, I don't think I'm ready. Yeah, I don't think I'm fit yet...I have to shed some weight. I have to be in the right shape to play any competitive football," he added.
The former Black Stars skipper was speaking ahead of the launch of his autobiography which captures his memoirs and features a no-holds-barred account of the untold stories behind his football career. The strictly by invitation event is set for 30th April at the Kempinski Hotel.

Old man, paa? then the MP is quite ancient. If Asamoah was -playing competitive football, then fine. As it is now, he needs to drop about 50 pounds, re-build his "football muscles", be able to do minimum 10-minute mile, and also regain his pace. That may be a bridge too far. Suarez (35 years old) and CR7 (37 years old) have been playing top level football for so many years in spite of their ages, Asamoah-Gyan has not for a few years now. Let's not kid ourselves, better to go with those playing and stop this tramadol-induced trance.
