Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, Minister for Youth and Sports has launched the McDan Open organized by the McDan Group of Companies and the Ghana Tennis Association (GTA) aimed at unearthing and developing talents.
The tennis open billed for April 22 – 26 April will draw participation from players from 18 years onward.
According to the GTA, the tournament is opened to professional players with another set for December for the juniors.
The Minister said that equal attention should also be given to the less popular sports. "It is not all about football and the Black Stars even though we love them. Equal attention should be given to the lesser known sports in the country.
“The government can not sponsor all the sporting disciplines in the country. It is therefore prudent for private entities to come support the disciplines and encourage them by providing the needed materials for international tournament”.
Chief Executive Officer of McDan Group of Companies, Daniel McKorley said that, his outfit was determined to develop tennis for the local and international stages.
He said, “Passion for the sport drove me to collaborate with the GTA to bring people together. My passion in sports is to build individual and nations. I want to take over Ghana sports and make sure that all the international players come to play tennis in Ghana.
“After the event, we will take the top four players for training in Spain to prepare them well for international competitions.
The tournament is open for men singles and female singles.
