ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme Begins 2012 Programme

The ECOWAS Brown Card insurance Scheme, Ghana Bureau has embarked on a nationwide publicity-drive campaign to create awareness on the operations and procedures of the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme across the 10 regions of Ghana. The ECOWAS Brown Card Scheme was established by Protocol A/PI/5/82 at Cotonou by heads of states and governments of ECOWAS. The main objective of the Scheme is to ensure prompt and fair compensation to victims of motor accidents caused by non-citizen motorists visiting their territory from other ECOWAS member states. A series of educational activities have been scheduled to be held across the regions as part of efforts of the Ghana Bureau�s awareness campaign programme geared towards drawing the public�s attention to the operations of the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme in order to contribute to providing better understanding of basic procedures and to develop public interest in the Brown Card Insurance Scheme. The first quarter educational campaign programme which seeks to engage various stakeholders, transporters and member companies started in Accra on January 19, 2012, while that for Tema and Alfao is scheduled for March 14 and 16, 2012 respectively. The second quarter educational programme will include stakeholders across Takoradi, Elubo and Kumasi on April 25, April 27 and May 23, 2012 respectively. The third quarter campaign will target Tamale on September 24, Paga on September 27 and Bolga on October 22, 2012. This is among the many steps that the Bureau has taken towards educating the public on the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme and the critical role it plays in economic development among member states. The year-long publicity and education campaign is focused on creating improved awareness and offers the general public and stakeholders the opportunity to be part of the national Bureau�s educational activities on dynamic lectures and presentations on various issues concerning the ECOWAS Brown Card Insurance Scheme in the country.
