EC Targets 13m Voters To Register

The Electoral Commission of Ghana is hoping to capture about 12.5 million or a maximum of 13 million Ghanaians in the new voters register by the time the ongoing biometric voter registration exercise ends. At the close of the first phase of the exercise, over 2.5 million Ghanaians have so far registered ahead of the December elections, reports The Finder newspaper. The acting Director of Public Affairs at the Electoral Commission, Mr. Christian Owusu-Parry, told the newspaper the exercise, which enters into its second phase on Wednesday, is progressing according to plans. He said the EC had been able to reduce incidents of equipment malfunction to the minimum. Meanwhile, the chairman of the electoral body, Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Djan, had appealed to the IGP, Paul Tawiah Quaye to provide maximum security for the registration officers undertaking the biometric registration exercise. As you know, we have no official powers of arrest and if people have been arrested, we cannot prosecute them. We have to rely on you to arrest and prosecute them, the EC boss told the IGP, who visited the Commissions headquarters last week. The registration exercise has been plagued with a number of issues ranging from malfunctioning equipment to unidentified people disrupting the process at some registration centres. The police have given the assurance they will ensure the security of electorate and registration officials in the next phase of the exercise.
