The Odumase Circuit Court in the Eastern region, has handed the five people who assaulted the head teacher of the Duffor Methodist Basic School, a total fine of GH600 or in default, nine months imprisonment, each. Additionally the court ordered each of the accused to pay the victim GH300 as compensation and sign a bond to be of good behavior for nine months or in default, serve six months imprisonment. The sixth accused, Ezekiel Tetteh-Fio was acquitted and discharged for lack of evidence. The five, Amenuvor Patrick, 21, Joseph Narhyo Tettey-Fio, 29, Joshua Tettey-Fio, 28, Richard Tettey-Fio, 18, and Osei Narteh 18, pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit crime and assault. The prosecution told the court, presided over by Mr. Asmah Akwasi Asiedu that five were identified by the victim Ms Juliana Teikor Quarshie, as among the irate mob which stormed the Duffor Methodist Basic School in the Dangme West District on January 16 and severely assaulted her, threw her out of the school and locked up the classrooms. Ms Teiko lodged a complaint with the Asutsuare Police who arrested the six and charged them. The Times on January 24, reported that a group of irate youth at Duffor invaded the only school in the community, assaulted the head teacher, threw her out and locked up the classrooms in protest against the perennial poor performances of the pupils at the BECE. The group, numbering about 20, singing war songs, reportedly entered the office of Ms Quarshie, 55, and carried her, together with the chair she was sitting on, and flung her to the ground outside. As the school pupils wailed and other teachers pleaded, the mob turned on them, assaulted and drove all of them away. They also assaulted the staff of nearby clinic, who gave Ms Quarshie refuge. Meanwhile, all the four JHS pupils of the school have been transferred to a school in a nearby town to enable them to write their examinations. All the teachers have been transferred from the town, but the Times learnt that those posted to replace them have refused to take up their appointments.
