VICE PRESIDENTIAL candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called for an end to the atrocities and intimidation associated with the ongoing biometric registration exercise in the Northern region.
He has also appealed to supporters of the various political parties to ensure that minors are not registered in order to make the voters� register more credible for the December polls urging them to follow appropriate channels in addressing their grievances.
Dr Bawumia, who visited a number of polling stations within Tamale recently to get first hand information on numerous complaints of discrepancies in the exercise, noted the registration was key to the NPP�s chances of winning the elections.
Some of the clusters visited include Tuffuor Hotel and Zogbele where he interacted with Electoral Commission (EC) officials as well as security personnel.
According to him, it was incumbent on supporters of the party who had attained 18 years and above to be registered and have their particulars duly captured on the bio data observing that it was the first step in returning the NPP to power.
He appealed to NPP agents at the various polling stations to be extra vigilant and challenge the registration of minors and unqualified persons through provisions of the EC.
Dr. Bawumia explained that the rationale behind biometric exercise is to completely eliminate the multiple registrations and voting that characterized the 2008 elections.
He tasked officials at the centers to exhibit a high sense of professionalism in the execution of their jobs appealing to the security agencies to nip the rowdy conduct reported at the clusters in the bud.
�The NPP is committed to a peaceful elections and all peace loving Ghanaians must work towards achieving this goal,� he noted.
The NPP running mate urged the leadership of the party in the region to attach seriousness to the exercise as it races towards the last lap urging them to be ambassadors of the �NPP Victory 2012� agenda.
Accompanying Dr. Bawumia on the visit were Sheik T.B Damba, an NPP national executive, Daniel Bugri Naabu, a leading member of the party, Dr. Clifford Braimah, NPP regional scribe, Iddrisu Musah, Superior Tamale Central parliamentary candidate and other party bigwigs.
Later in an interaction with Daily Guide, Dr. Bawumia reiterated the need for the NPP to capture more seats in the northern region hinting that plans are far advanced to propel the party to greater heights in the region.
Sources close to the party have revealed that a strategic campaign will be rolled out in the three northern regions in the coming weeks to rope in floating voters as part of measures to improve the NPP�s fortunes.
Dr. Bawumia it is rumored, with the support of some opinion leaders in Mamprugu is working tirelessly to snatch up the four Mamprugu seats currently held by the NDC.
