Over-Reliance On IMF Others Killing Us-TUC

The Secretary General of the Trades Union Congress (TUC), Mr. Kofi Asamoah, has called for a paradigm shift in the countrys approach to solving her economic problems. Speaking at this years May Day celebration held at the Sunyani Coronation Park yesterday, Mr. Asamoah said the over-reliance on externally-driven solutions to the countrys economic woes has not helped over the years and called for locally-driven solutions to ensure long-term economic growth. According to the TUC boss, the over-reliance on foreign institutions such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has not helped in addressing the various problems such as unemployment and inequitable economic growth facing the country. He therefore asked government to develop policies and put structures in place for long-term employment for an improved economy, adding that the problems of failed national policies has been structural. He said it is the expectation of organized labour to see creation of goods jobs and improved living conditions of Ghanaians. Mr. Asamoah called on government to make good its promise to make the private sector the engine of growth and appealed for jobs for the private sector, especially in the areas of health and sanitation. He said the countrys private sector is currently over exposed to unfair international competition and urged the government to review the countrys trade policy with a view to dealing with the constraints of the sector. The TUC General Secretary expressed worry over the high lending rates charged by the countrys financial institutions, which, he said, is a disincentive to private sector development. Mr. Asamoah called on Ghanaians to ensure peace and transparency in the coming general elections.
