Mensah Otabil To Monitor 2012 Elections

The Christian Council of Ghana has put together a group of eminent persons to ensure issues that fuelled tension in the 2008 elections are not repeated in the upcoming December elections. Pastor Mensah Otabil and Professor Marian Ewurama Addy are the co-chairs of the Board with the General Secretary of the Christian Council Rev. Dr Fred Deegbe serving as the Executive Secretary. There are eleven other members on the Board. The group will among other things, ensure a smooth transitional process and a coordinated civil society front for the elections. In 2008, the general elections and the run-off were characterized by heightened tension but the timely intervention of the group was critical in sustaining the peace in the country. General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Reverend Fred Deegbe in an interview with XYZ News said the Board will be more proactive this time round. Based on what happened [in 2008] they asked us to be proactive this year instead of being reactionary. The group includes people who basically cut across society in terms of their own stature, their non partisanship and who speak into situations before, during and after the elections.
