Kufuor And Rawlings Tasked

CHAIRMAN OF the defunct Ghana Democratic Movement (GDM) based in the UK, Alex Asabre has appealed to former presidents Jerry John Rawlings and John Agyekum Kufuor to work together to ensure peaceful elections in December. In a statement he issued to the media recently, Mr. Asabre urged Messrs Kufuor and Rawlings to come out with the rich knowledge they acquired during their tenures as presidents to either individually or jointly issue a bold statement condemning politicians who visit atrocities on the electorate without justification. In his opinion, politicians whose actions and speech incite violence and create fear among the populace must be condemned. He described the violent clashes that ensued between political rivals during the just-ended biometric registration exercise in various parts of the country as unfortunate wondering why politicians should hurt people for queuing in the scorching sun in order to get registered in fulfillment of their constitutional right. Mr. Asabre who is in the country for a short holiday appealed to President Mills to call his appointees to order. He also implored state authorities to act and save the country from violence, urging the president and his government to do whatever they can to rule Ghana peacefully. Mr. Asabre commended former president Rawlings for exhibiting political maturity in the face of numerous challenges and the recent democratic statements he made in East Africa, urging governments to listen to opposition parties. He said although he disagreed with the former president in the 80s over the democratization of Ghana, he is now one of his political mentors and democrats. For this reason, I will love to see the NDC founder face-to-face one day on friendly terms, he said adding the maltreatment being meted out to Mr. Rawlings and his wife by the NDC cannot happen anywhere in the world, considering his role in the formation of the NDC.
