There seems to be some form of confusion as to whether the Ashanti Regional Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has been suspended following the unprecedented national disgrace brought about by... ...the suspension of the Ghana-Lesotho World Cup qualifier after flood lights at the Baba Yara Sports stadium went off for well over an hour. The Black Stars were leading by four(4) goals to nil with some fifteen minutes of the second half played, when referee Diatta Badara of Senegal stopped the match due to total darkness. The Kenyan match commissioner Kasuve Titus Mutukku then gave the country's sports officials an hour to restore lights at the stadium, otherwise he will call the game off. The embarrassing moment led to the Director of Communications at the presidency, Koku Anyidoho telling PeaceFM's Anim Addo in an interview that the Ashanti Regional boss of the ECG has been fired with immediate effect. According to him, the neck of all those on duty at ECG and all those who had something do with the matter are on the line. "President Mills is upset and everybody who has a role to play in the matter will have their heads roll...This is unacceptable and the president is upset," Koku Anyidoho said. But there is doubt whether his statement carries any weight especially where the ECG claims it cannot be held responsible. The Energy Ministry also say they have only called for an inquisition into the incident and have asked the ECG in Ashanti Region to furnish them (Ministry) with a report of what actually happened. The Public Relations Officer of the ECG, Erasmus Baidoo is rather blaming the National Sports Council. According to him, the Baba Yara Sports stadium was running on the generators of the Sports Council and that ECG was only a backup adding that there was power supplied by the ECG and that it was a switch on the generator of the Sports Council that developed a fault. "There is no reason why there is no power in the stadium except that the generators of the Sports Council developed a problem...If flood lights went off, the ECG cannot be held accountable," he said.
