Atmosphere In Hohoe Still Tense

The atmosphere in Hohoe remains tense two-days after Zongo youths vandalized the home of Togbega Gabusu, Paramount Chief of the Gbi Traditional Area, prompting reprisal attacks. By 1100 hours on Wednesday, public basic schools and many shops were still closed. There were reports of arson attacks on two shops around 2100hours Tuesday night and 0400 hours Wednesday. Workers of Zoomlion Company are, however, on the streets and in the alleys clearing debris left following reprisal attacks on the property of Zongo dwellers in the Municipality on Monday. Some women and children in the Zongo Community have reportedly relocated to Jasikan and Kadjebi leaving the youths behind. Four people have so far been confirmed dead in the crisis. The town, which is under heavy security monitoring, is also under dusk to dawn curfew. On Tuesday, Sheikh Nuhu Sharabutu, National Chief Imam, was in Hohoe where he attended a crunch meeting of regional political heads, security chiefs and representatives of the Gbis. He told the meeting that he would do his best to broker peace between his compatriots and their Gbis hosts. The Monday violence started when some youth of the Zongo community found the exhumed body of the local chief Imam at the roadside at the outskirt of the town after his burial on Sunday. He was reportedly buried in defiance of a ban on the burial of members of the Zongo Community on Gbi land. The traditional authorities of Gbi imposed the ban after some Zongo youth vandalized the Hohoe Government Hospital and attacked some of its staff accusing them that their negligence had led to the death of their colleague who was sent there to be treated for electrocution last week Wednesday. Reports say 22-year-old Abdulai Majid was working in the vicinity of the hospital when the incident happened but staff on duty demanded his National Health Insurance card. He, however, died before the card arrived. The Hospital authorities have caused investigations to establish the cause of death and related issues.
