The Eastern Regional Minister, Ambassador Victor Smith, has stated that no political party other than the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had done so much for the country in terms of social amenities and poverty alleviation initiatives for the past 20 years. He said although the NDC lost the 2000 elections to the New Patriotic Party (NPP), its good works in terms of the provision of social amenities and other poverty alleviation initiatives, which served as a magnet to the people, returned the party to power in 2008. Ambassador Smith further stated that the reassuring manner in which the Mills Administration had continued with the party�s good policies would definitely make it possible for the NDC to retain power. He made these statements when he, together with municipal and district chief executives and regional and constituency executives of the party, attended a thanksgiving service at the Possibility Temple of the International Central Gospel Church at Somanya to climax a three-day celebration of the 20th milestone of the NDC on Sunday. The event, which was also attended by a large number of party faithfuls and supporters in the region, also witnessed the donation of 100 bags of cement, 30 student mattresses for needy students in the congregation, seven bags of rice, a cash donation of GH�1,000 among other items. According to the ambassador, President John Evans Mills had also proved that he was a father to all Ghanaians, irrespective of political affiliations, by ensuring the provision of social amenities such as good roads, clinics, school buildings and poverty alleviation amenities like the school feeding programme, free exercise books and uniforms for pupils in all communities. He, however, admitted that not all the communities had been covered and appealed to the people, especially those in the region, to exercise patience for their turn since �Rome was not built in a day�. �Since 2009 when we regained power, we had rolled out a development programme, especially in the educational sector, of which 546 facilities such as classroom blocks, teachers� bungalows and dormitories had been provided. He said more of such facilities, as well as others, had been lined up for the communities and expressed the hope that the people would once again rally behind the NDC to retain power and complete its �Better Ghana Agenda� to make life worth living for all Ghanaians.
