Interior Ministry Reviews Hohoe Curfew

Government has decided to relax the 6am-6pm curfew it imposed on the Hohoe Municipality in the Volta Region. The Ministry of Interior, following recommendations from the Volta Regional Security Council (REGSEC), decided to review the curfew. The new curfew time starts from 5:00am to 8:00pm daily. Regional Minister, Henry Ford Kamel, who is also the Chairman of the REGSEC confirmed this in an interview. The dusk-to-dawn curfew was imposed after violent clashes between indigenes and Muslim youths led to the death of three people and the destruction of several properties. Thousands of residents were also displaced. Violence broke over the exhumation of the Hohoe Chief Imam resulting in the attack and destruction of the Palace of Torgbiga Gabusu, the paramount chief of the Gbi Traditional Area, by Muslim youths. The indigenes also followed suit with reprisal attacks on Muslim residents, burning down shops and houses. In order to restore peace, law and order, the REGSEC, in consultation with the Interior Ministry, imposed the dusk-to-dawn curfew. But Hon Ford Kamel says calm has been restored with the Moslems returning from exile', and believes reviewing the curfew is in the supreme interest of the area.
