A group of police detectives calling itself, �Concerned Detectives�, has waded into the controversial shooting incident of June 2010 involving Attorney General and Minister of Justice Dr. Benjamin Kunbour, describing him as a tool being used by President Mills to cover up what it describes as the �police good criminal investigations�. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) issued a couple of reports implicating Dr. Kunbour on criminal intents, shortly after he was reportedly shot at by unknown assassins in his VW Passat saloon car with registration number GR 4656 10. �The existence of our report makes Dr. Kunbuor an easy tool in the hands of the President to cover up good criminal investigations dockets for mere political expediency,� the Concerned Detectives stated in a statement sent to DAILY GUIDE. Incidentally, the police report of July 2010 and a subsequent cover letter dated August 4, 2010 and signed by Director General of CID, Commissioner of Police (COP) Prosper Kwame Agblor, suggested the shot was fired by Dr. Kunbour�s Israeli-made Jericho 941 PSL gun, which the police made him submit for investigation at its Ballistic laboratory. It was also realized that the trajectory of the bullet came from the driver�s side of Dr. Kunbour�s car, through the front passengers� window. The police had been unable to ascribe any motive for the shooting, creating a wide vacuum of credibility on the issue. Apparently, this attracted the displeasure of some police detectives. �As Concerned Detectives, we have complained about the propriety to our very challenging job of investigations for the President to knowingly appoint Dr. Benjamin Kunbour first as the Minister for the Interior and secondly to confirm him as the Attorney-General in an office which requires its occupiers to be persons of proven integrity and high moral character,� stated the aggrieved detectives. �With the publication of the final report, we expose both the integrity of the President and Dr. Kunbuor who should have resigned or been dismissed under any Government bent on eradicating crime,� the detectives complained in their statement. �As detectives, politics is not our business. Ours is to expose crime which we do by this publication,� they said. �Being government�s main legal advisor, the position of the Attorney General is very critical to the delivery of justice in Ghana. Importantly, the seat of the Attorney General requires persons with impeccable character,� they added. Forensics Indeed, police investigations conducted in July and August 2010 implicated Dr. Kunbour and gave impetus to his predecessor, former Attorney General Martin Amidu�s call for the prosecution of Dr. Kunbour for �manufacturing� his own assassination attempt. �Police produced a damning report on Dr. Kunbuor which he sent to the President and yet the President found it convenient to appoint such a person as Dr. Kunbuor as Attorney-General so that he would be afraid to resist carrying out any instructions from the President even when they are unprofessional and unconstitutional,� stated the detectives who would rather remain anonymous. The relative non-committal of communication from both Dr. Kunbour and the Presidency amidst the media rave on the controversy, had given room to all sorts of interpretations. The bizarre incident, which was shrouded in unknown motives on the part of Dr. Kunbour, and the �hush hush� treatment being given the incident by the government machinery, had opened up a whole can of worms. The incident started on June 28, 2010, when Dr. Kunbour was said to have been shot at by unknown assailants at Labone on his way from an unknown rendezvous. Dr. Kunbour stated in his statements to the police that he heard a thud on his car on that fateful day, and on further investigation, realized that he was being targeted by an assassin. According to him, he zoomed off the scene in his dented VW Passat. Being a Health Minister at the time, the allegation was very serious, forcing the police into a frantic investigation to uncover the alleged crime. However, when the police conducted forensic and ballistic inquisition on the bullet marks, it was realized that the gunshot actually came from inside Dr. Kunbour�s car, of which he was the sole occupant at the time. Dr. Kunbour had since then denied ever owning a gun as well as reporting the matter to the police that he was under assassination attacks. Some groups were readying themselves for a showdown with Dr Kunbuor for his alleged deceitful act which they claimed was criminal. A-G must respond Attorney General Dr. Benjamin Kunbuor is being asked to come clean on allegations that he faked an assassination attempt on himself or risk being dragged to the Supreme Court. Former Attorney General Martin Amidu last week accused Dr. Kunbuor of lacking the integrity to prosecute the Alfred Woyome GH�51 million judgment debt case because he allegedly faked the assassination attempt. Legal Advocacy Group, Centre for National Affairs, questioned Dr. Kumbuor�s silence on the matter. Its Senior Policy Analyst, Rocky Obeng, said the law must be allowed to take its full course to protect the integrity of the Attorney General�s office. He said since a criminal suit could not be brought against the AG, what the group would do � if Dr Kunbuor failed to respond to the allegations � was to �file a case at the Supreme Court for the Supreme Court to determine whether the conduct [of Dr Kunbuor] as reported in the [police] investigation report which is in the company of the BNI and the Ghana Police Service constitutes misconduct.�
