The youth and people of Ketu South District, particularly Aflao, have advised the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) that they would �rebel� against the party should they be excluded from the current re-demarcation exercise in the country.
In a statement issued last Friday and signed by some concerned citizens, the youth and people of Ketu South expressed dissatisfaction with the exclusion of Ketu South District in the creation of the four new constituencies, including Nchumuru, Adaklu, Kpando and another in the Akatsi District.
They therefore threatened to boycott government�s activities including the impending inauguration of the Ketu South Municipality Assembly by the chiefs and people of Aflao as well as Assembly members from Aflao.
They stressed that �Ketu South people deserve some respect and we can assure all and sundry that there will be some shocks and surprises if we are not given a new district and a new constituency. More so we shall ban revenue collectors from operating in the district especially in Aflao.�
They noted that they were not against the creation of 45 new constituencies in accordance with Article 47(1), 47(3) and 47(4) of the 1992 Constitution, but wondered why Ketu South had been excluded in spite of the overwhelming evidence of the availability of land.
�As law-abiding and concerned citizens of Ketu South, we are sending a strong warning to government and the Electoral Commission (EC) not to overlook the population of Ketu South because we are going to be defiant if Ketu South is excluded from the current re- demarcation exercise going on.�
According to the concerned citizens of Ketu South, the area has a population of over 200,000 with a voter population of over 125,000.
We are at a loss that Ave-Avenor with a voter population of 48,000 is being re-demarcated. Common sense tells us that the Electoral Commission (EC), in re-demarcating constituencies in Volta region, will consider the constituency which has the highest number of voters. What is clear to many Ghanaians is that the Electoral Commissioner, in performing its constitutional mandate, had jettisoned the basic criterion used in this exercise that is, the population size.�
They therefore described the action of the Election Commission as unfair and unreasonable, which violated Article 23 of the 1992 Constitution.
They also accused NDC of betraying them by mysteriously excluding Aflao Municipality.
The concerned citizens alleged that the new districts in the Volta region were shared among some influential ministers and government officials from the region.
They claimed some MPs such as Juliana Mensah Azumah, Minister of Women and Children�s Affairs, Hon. Akua Dansua, Minister of Tourism and Joe Gidisu benefitted from the exercise.
Others include the First Deputy Speaker, Hon. Doe Adjaho, Joseph Zephanat Amenorwode, former Volta Regional Minister and Bebaako Mensah, Secretary to the President.
�Who in government today and who in NDC does not know that Ketu South, especially Aflao has the highest population in the Volta region and also has the highest voter population in the region aside being the most economically viable area in the region.�
For them, inhabitants of Ketu South have been betrayed by government.
The concerned citizens, who signed the statement, included the spokesperson, Kafui Mensah, Mengistus Agorbia, Wisdom Doe Haligah, Alex Alowe, Joseph Nyavie.
This will be about the fifth time the people of Ketu South have agitated against the ruling NDC government, a situation analysts believe will spell doom for the NDC in the December elections, if not checked.
