A GENDER activist and Regional Campaign Coordinator for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Ashanti region has slammed President Mills for reneging on his pledge to ensure 30 percent women participation in his government.
During an interaction with women�s groups at Bekwai, Abena Pokuaa Amoah said the only thing women had received from the Mills-Mahama administration was mere rhetoric, adding, �Today, the suffering of women across the length and breadth of the country is insurmountable.�
During the 2008 general elections, gender advocates mooted the idea for political parties to consider giving 30 percent representation to women in government.
As the NDC�s presidential candidate at the time Prof Mills campaigned vigorously for the acceptance of women promising to implement the concept when voted to power.
According to �Ejisu Broni,� the current administration led by Prof. Mills had shown gross incompetence in finding coherent strategies to tackle issues faced by Ghanaians.
She said it was high time women asserted themselves, and demanded inclusion and proportional consideration in the political process and governance as an inalienable right that is long overdue.
�Moreover their ad-hoc policies on women issues have done absolutely nothing to offer Ghanaian women hope; rather they have failed us miserably,� she pointed out.
�We should not sit on our laurels and be content with the status quo expecting others to do the talking for us! We need to be bold and vigilant and continue to fight for our fair quota and what we believe in�more active involvement for women in national politics.�
According to the NPP campaign coordinator, women were under represented in political leadership despite the fact that they outnumbered the men, saying the fear of insults and denigration had made them recoil.
She advised women to embrace their colleagues who engage in politics both at the grassroots and national level.
�It is always the same women being called upon over and over again changing their hats. We need more young women and fresh faces in our local politics to take over from these women when they leave the stage.�
She urged women to vote massively for the party�s flag bearer, Nana Akufo-Addo since he was a visionary leader and people-centered person, who could reverse the clock of Ghana�s retrogression.
