EC Sued....By NPP, NDC, CPP And PNC

Peacefmonline.com can confirm that the four main political parties in the country the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), the Convention Peoples Party (CPP) and the Peoples National Convention (PNC) -... ...have jointly sued the Electoral Commission from going ahead with its plans to conduct by-elections in the Kwabre East and Wulensi constituencies. The four leading political parties argue that if allowed to hold the by-elections, the EC will be in clear violation of the Constitutional Instrument 72 C of the 1992 Constitution. The EC has served notice it will not use the newly compiled - but yet to be completed, biometric voters register. But the political parties are oppose to the use of the old register. The by-elections were necessitated following the deaths of Alhaji Saani Idi and Emmanuel Asamoah Owusu-Ansah who represented the Wulensi and Kwabre East respectively. The EC fixed July 31 for the Wulensi by-election, while the Kwabre East election was slated for August 14. However, this action by the quartet who filed the writ at the High Court against the EC and the Attorney General will in no doubt halt the by-elections. General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, who spoke to PeaceFM NEWS a short while ago, explained that they took the action because the old register has been revoked and using it for the by-elections would amount to an illegality.
