Ghana Takes Second Place At North Division Rugby Africa Cup

The Senior National 7s Rugby Team, the Black Eagles, put up a spectacular show to place second at the just ended Confederation of African Rugby (CAR) Rugby 7s competition in Lome, Togo. The black eagles after a spectacular performance to the amazement of all found themselves trailing 12 � 0 after an illegal try was allowed. The eagles managed to pull 5 points back in the second half but this was however not enough to win them the match, as it ended 12 � 5 in favour of Niger. The team departed Accra for Togo at about 1:00pm on Thursday 28th June 2012 and arrived at about 7:00pm at the Sege Sports Stadium in Lome, where all participating teams were camped for the tournament. Ghana played her first match against the host nation on the morning of Friday 29th June, followed by two matches on the same day. The match against Togo ended 5 � 0 in favour of the black eagles, the second match which was against Togo�s second team, who replaced Algeria ended 10 � 0 in favour of Ghana. Even though the eagles scored first, they unfortunately lost to Niger in their final group game and thus finished second in Group B, which featured Togo A, Togo B Niger and Ghana. The performance enabled the Eagles to play Burkina Faso, who placed first in Group, A which included the likes of Egypt, Benin, Mali and Burkina Faso, in the semi final game. The Eagles triumphed over their Burkinabe counterparts by 10 points to 0 to qualify the eagles to the grand finale which would be played against Niger who drew 0 � 0 against Mali in their semi final match but qualified on superior point accumulation. The black eagles were with these results crowned 2nd place in the overall rankings of the tournament.
