UPDATED: NDC For Congress In Sept...But Mahama Already Endorsed Flagbearer

The National Executive Council (NEC) of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), at an emergency meeting today following the demise of Professor John Evans Atta Mills on Tuesday July 24, has set September 1 as the date the party would go for congress. But the NDC has already endorsed President John Dramani Mahama as the candidate for the December general elections. A two-page resolution adopted by the NEC members reads: The National Executive Committee at its emergency meeting on the 26th day of July 2012, held at the Institute of Local Government Studies , Accra in respect of the creation of a vacancy of a flag-bearer of the NDC hereby resolve as follows: That a special delegates congress to endorse the leader of the NDC, H.E. John Dramani Mahama as a flag-bearer of the NDC to contest the 2012 Presidential elections in accordance with the due process of the partys constitution to be conveyed not in less than 1st September, 2012. The party has however set September 1 as the date the party would go for its special delegates congress to outdoor him to the entire NDC body". President Mahama will thus slug it out with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Presidential Candidate, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo; People's National Convention (PNC) Flagbearer, Hassan Ayariga; Convention People's Party (CPP) Leader, Dr. Abu Sakara and Progressive Peoples Party (PPP)candidate, Dr. Paa Kwesi Ndoum. President Mills' sudden death on Tuesday, left vacancies not only at the presidency, but also on the NDCs presidential ticket. Mr. Dramani Mahama, the former Vice-President, was sworn into office hours later, in accordance with Article 60 (6 -10) of the 1992 Constitution. But the void in the presidential slot of the NDC remain unfilled. Several NDC stalwarts are present at the meeting but conspicuously absent is the party's Founder and Chairman of the Council of Elders, ex-President Jerry John Rawlings. The NDC executives who were present include the National Chairman, Kwabena Agyei, General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu -Nketia, Foreign Affairs Minister, Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni, National Propaganda Secretary, Richard Quarshigah, Minister of Agric, Kwesi Awhoi, Attorney General Ben Kumbour.
