Tribute To My Father - Samuel Fiifi Atta Mills

I remember when I was a young boy, when I used to call my father Uncle Fiifi, because everyone called him by that name. Dad brought me up with Christian values. He was a family man with strict principles. Though he did not talk much, one look or wink from him made one learn from ones mistakes Dad you taught me to respect everyone I come into contact with. You instilled vales to make me grow up into a man of integrity. You taught me to be content with what God has provided. even when you became President, you showed by word and example, that it is possible to hold political office without being corrupt. You taught me family values that have stuck with me. You taught me that discipline does not kill and that people must be given credit where it is due. You taught me to put others first. Indeed you lived for others. Sunday mornings were my favourite times with you. You called at 8:00am and we spoke for a long time. You told me about your youthful days, growing on the farm, and also about your days at Achimota School and as a student at the University of Ghana (Legon). You told me how you were able to attain scholarships for graduate studies. As a son, it was such a joy joining you on the campaign trail. i thank God for having the opportunity to feel at close range, your desire to get the mandate of the people, not to rule and lord it over them, but to serve in humility so as to create a Better Ghana. But most importantly, in recent years, you led me to know the Jesus you had come to believe in and whom you served to the end. You taught me to listen more and speak less, in order to be as wise as a serpent, yet harmless as a dove. You told me to seek God's first opinion in everything. You taught me the value of silence and to always be slow to anger. You taught me values of leadership and the difference between being born into leadership and being elected as a leader. You taught me the values of servant leadership, the type of leadership you will only find in the Bible. Above all, you taught me how to watch and pray, which has helped me a lot through these difficult days. Dad, you ensured in the past year that i joined you and the team of ministers for Bible study and prayer every morning, right in your bedroom. Just before I travelled outside recently, I promised to live for Jesus all my life. I promised I will never do anything that will bring disgrace to your name. I prayed that you will live long to see what God will do with my life. But alas, death has laid its icy hands on you and you left without saying "goodbye". But i promise by God grace, to live a life that will bring honour to you and the legacy you have left for me and the whole nation. Dad, I know we shall meet again in heaven. Till then, I say good bye to a friend, mentor, teacher and father, rest in perfect peace.
