CRC Justifies 3.5 million US Dollars Budget In Reviewing The Constitution

Former Executive Secretary of the Constitutional Review Commission (CRC), Dr. Raymond Atuguba has described as unfounded the rumors making rounds in some sections of the media that the 3.5 million US dollars budget during the review process is inappropriate. He says given the enormous duties of the CRC, the amount spent is reasonable since other countries spent more money on their constitutional reviews than Ghana. He said it is important that Ghana prioritizes the creation of solid good governance infrastructural if it is not to go the way of our neighbors like Cote Dlvoire and Mali. Dr. Raymond Atuguba further said it is important to compare the amount with other countries that are reviewing their constitutions. Zimbabwe which is referred to as a poor country has spent over 50 million dollars in revising its constitution. South-Sudan which is a new nation which has spent 100 million dollars in revising its constitution and Kenya has gone well upward to 250 million dollars. He also said Zimbabwe and South-Sudan have not reached the point where they have a report. We are joking if we complain about 3.5 million dollars to review the countrys constitution. What we have done is to punish the commissioners and staff who engaged in the national exercise. However, Dr. Atuguba noted that the committee used the combination of human expertise and a soft ware which assisted in the processing and submission of the report on the review of the constitution.
