The Minister of Justice and Attorney General, Dr Benjamin Kunbuor has been elected unopposed as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the newly created Nandom Constituency. Dr Kunbuor, who was the only candidate to have filed his papers at the end of the nomination process, is likely to face the deputy Minority Leader in Parliament, Mr Ambrose Dery, thus the battle of 2004 election re-visited. Addressing a delegates conference, Dr Kunbuor said he was going to lead the party to conduct a decent campaign which has never happened. He, therefore, urged his supporters to do same by not reacting to insult from the opponents of the party, adding that he was not going to be part of any dirty campaign. He recalled that Nandom was a constituency under the first President of Ghana, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, but was abolished after his overthrow and said thanks to the NDC government, the constituency was back. Dr Kunbuor said the NDC would wish to win both the presidential and parliamentary elections in the area and therefore urged the party�s supporters to intensify their campaign by explaining issues to the people. He appealed to the electorate to give him the mandate since he owed them a lot of gratitude. The deputy Upper West Regional Minister, Mr Ceasar Kale, called on supporters of the party to speak with one voice, love and unity of purpose by forgetting the past and unite towards the general elections. He described the Nandom area as a bulwark of the NDC and said now that it had been narrowed after being decoupled from the Lawra � Nandom Constituency, the party would surely win the seat. �Let us sweep the polling stations like a tsunami by winning not marginally but with wider margins�, he urged. The deputy national women�s organiser of the NDC, Hajia Zenabu Mahama, called the people to reciprocate the gesture of creating the constituency by voting massively for the party. For his part, the regional Vice Chairman of the party, Alhaji Nator Naah, described Dr Benjamin Kunbuor as a man of many parts,who needed to be sent back to Parliament. In a related development, the District Chief Executive for Lawra, Mr Sampson Abu, was elected the parliamentary candidate for Lawra when he defeated his closest rival, Paschal Dere, a development worker, with 163 votes as against 121 votes. In his acceptance speech, Mr Abu thanked the delegates for the confidence reposed in him and pledged to work hard to win the seat for the NDC.
