Kufuor: EC's Insistence To Create 45 New Constituencies Suspicious

The former President of Ghana John Agyekum Kufuor has stated that the persistence of the Electoral Commission to create 45 new constituencies raises suspicion over the motive of the commission. Mr. Kufuor has come under heavy criticisms for lambasting the EC some weeks ago over the move to create new constitutions three months to the general elections. The NDC accused the former President of intimidating and interfering in the affairs of the EC.But President Kufuor has rebuffed the accusations saying he only sought to caution the EC against acts that can destabilize the countrys peace. The electoral commission is accountable to the people of Ghana, it is not a law on itself or superior to the constitution so when we are appealing to it, we are not meddling or interfering Mr. Kufuor said. Mr. Kufuor added that we are only saying for the peace of the country, we really appeal to the electoral commission to wait till after the elections and then they can come out and do such things. Meanwhile, a former Local Government and Rural Development Minister, Joseph Yieleh Chireh has expressed doubt that the creation of the new constituencies is likely to spark mayhem in the December polls. Hon. Yieleh Chireh who is also MP for Wa West in an interview with XYZ News said while individuals can express their views on the work of the EC, it is only the law court that can order the commission into taking a particular action.
