2 Boys Drown

The Olebu community near Ablekuma, Accra, was thrown into shock last Sunday when two boys got drowned in a pool. The two boys went swimming under the footbridge of a newly constructed culvert. The bodies of Emmanuel Yankson, eight, and Alhaji Haruna, nine, were found floating around 6:30pm Sunday evening by a pedestrian who was passing by the area. The Olebu open culvert has recently become a swimming place for children within the Olebu and the Ablekuma communities. Children often troop to swim in the running water daily, while the number increases on weekends and holidays. The deceased were said to be among dozens of children who went to the bridge to swim around 2pm on Sunday. The Anyah police were called to retrieve the bodies to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. The deceased, who were not known in the area, were later identified by the parents who later visited the police station. Meanwhile, the mother of Alhaji Haruna, Yaa Abisah, told DAILY GUIDE that she sent the son around 6pm on that fateful day.My son left and never returned, she wept. When I was going to bed, I combed the whole area looking for my son but to no avail, she said. According to her, around 7am yesterday, she received information that two kids got drowned and so she proceeded to the Anyah Police Station. But she was informed that the bodies had been taken to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital. When we went to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital morgue, my son was one of the victims, she said.DAILY GUIDE gathered that some of the kids visited the open culvert to fish. A man who spoke on anonymity said five children were seen fishing in the open pool around 6pm.The deceased, according to him, might be part of the five. Freeman Tetteh, the Accra Regional Police Command Public Affairs Officer, told DAILY GUIDE that the bodies were currently at the Korle-Bu morgue for autopsy. He said police were yet to uncover the truth.
